Keeping this community safe is one of the primary duties of the JPSO; however,
we cannot do it alone. In an effort
to better engage the citizens of the parish, the JPSO has established a
Community Relations Section.
The Community Relations Section is housed at 1233 Westbank Expressway,
Harvey, LA 70058
in the Westbank Administrative Complex.
This Section oversees a variety of programs, serving the young, the
elderly, and everyone in between.
These programs are open to the general public and promote safety and fellowship
throughout.
A few of the programs are listed below:
- This Section oversees the local
Drug Abuse, Resistance and Education (DARE)
program. This widely used program is
designed to prevent drug abuse in children.
- The local Neighborhood Watch
program is also administered by this Section. This program teaches citizens techniques
to reduce the risk of being victimized at home
or in public. We currently service more
than 70 neighborhood groups.
- On the first Tuesday of August, the JPSO sponsors a
National Night Out Against Crime
. Representatives from the JPSO
try to attend as many neighborhood or civic association events and block parties
as possible to promote neighborhood safety.
- We also oversee the
The Young Marines Program
. This youth program is
open to boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 17. Its primary mission is to positively
impact America’s future by
providing quality youth development by promoting a healthy, drug and crime free
lifestyle.
- We also try to keep our elderly citizens engaged in the
community by providing cultural and recreational activities to them. The JPSO Community Relations Section
sponsors the
Senior Citizen's Program
which includes field trips, picnics and luncheons throughout
the area.
- With all of the parks and recreational activities in the
Parish, theft of a bicycle is, unfortunately, rather commonplace. So that
we can get your bicycle back to you when recovered, we have implemented a
Bicycle Registration Program
to capture vital information about your bike.
- We also sponsor a program titled
Jefferson Handy Emergency Line Phone (JHELP)
. This program collects used cell
phones from the public and distributes them to our senior citizens for use in
emergencies.
